Christ's Love in Action: Bringing God to People, and People to God

Music at SUMC

Music at SUMC

The goal of our music program is to be the beauty and vitality of music for our worship, and to use these ensembles as a way to grow in our discipleship of Jesus Christ.

CHANCEL CHOIR

Open to adults and senior high youth without audition, the Chancel Choir is the primary vocal ensemble for the church. The Choir leads the music for 11:00 AM Sunday worship each Sunday, once a month for 8:30 AM worship, and for other special worship services from September through June. The Choir sings a wide variety of music from traditional anthems to spirituals; from the world choral tradition to contemporary favorites.  Highlights of the choral season include annual Advent & Easter programs, sometimes with orchestral accompaniment; special Lenten and Holy Week services; and the 11:00 PM Christmas Eve service.

A CAPPELLA HYMNSINGERS

A small, select ensemble for singers with good reading, harmonizing, and blending skills, this unaccompanied chorus sings the first Sunday of each month at 8:30 AM worship; for the 8:00 PM Christmas Eve service; and for other special services throughout the year.  Repertoire includes music from various church traditions including Shape Note & Sacred Harp hymns and camp-meeting songs.

CHILDREN’S CHOIRS

Angel Choir: 3-5 yrs (preschool)

Cherub Choir: Grades 1-3

Sonshine Singers: Grades 4-6

With three choirs to accommodate children ages 3 years - 6th grade, we offer excellent training for young music ministers. The children participate in a variety of activities including singing in worship services, and presenting special choir programs at Christmas, often using bells, hand chimes, and costumed drama. Each choir sings at least 4 - 5 times a year during one of the Sunday morning worship services. Perhaps the highlight of the choir season is the annual Christmas musical presented in early- to mid-December.  Those who are in town just for the holidays are also invited to sing for the Children’s Christmas Eve service.

INSTRUMENTAL ENSEMBLE

Open to all youth and adults who play strings, woodwind, brass or percussion instruments at an intermediate-to-advanced level. The ensemble accompanies hymns and provides special music for worship every four to six weeks. Additionally, ensemble members comprise the core of the orchestra for Chancel Choir programs and concerts.

REDEEMER’S SONG

This ensemble of both youth and adults leads the music for the Praise & Worship Service at 9:45 on Sundays.  Rehearsals are held each Sunday at 2:45 PM in the Sanctuary.  Singers and/or instrumentalists are needed.  If you have a gift for this ministry and would like to participate, please contact Rich Wunderlin or Wayne Johnson, for more information.

HAND CHIMES

Our two ensembles, Alleluia Chimes & Jubilate Ringers, are open to youth and adults of all skill levels. Each group plays every four to six weeks for one of the weekly services.

For more information on any of these ensembles, or to find out how to join them, please contact Wayne Johnson, Director of Music Ministries, music@sumcdisciples.org
